interjection. used in edinburgh as a warning cry when it was customary to throw slops from the windows into the streets (m-w.com)

supposedly from the french garde à l’eau!, “look out for the water!” as the story goes, king philippe auguste of france (1180-1223) got dumped on, and so began the tradition of warning the unwary passersby.

camille’s word, camille’s link. my link? “bucket of bubbling poop.”
